What Is Plaque?

It is sticky film substance almost invisible to the seeing eye. Plaque clings to your tooth surfaces, between the teeth and in the tiny minute crevices of your gums. It is composed of saliva, tissue cells from the inner mouth surfaces and a hosting presents of living bacteria. It is important to be protective of your teeth because plaque can build up in significant amounts within a 24 hour period. Because of your mouths' wet saliva, plaque continues to form even if you have not eaten or have just brush. Plaque is to be removed daily. Your diet containing refined carbohydrates ( eg. such as sugar and starches) accumulates in the plaque with your mouth bacteria flora produces acid. One should keep in mind to memory that sugar does not have to taste sweet to be sugar. This acid on your tooth enamel surfaces can in time dissolve its enamel which leads to the cause of tooth sensitivity and tooth decay. Preventive Care Daily Routine

This requires a Home Care Hygiene Kit that includes:

  • A good source of light to see the your teeth inner and outer surfaces.
  • A facial fix or hand view mirror. Also, a hand dental mouth mirror to see the back and side of teeth and soft tissue.
  • A basic tooth brush with soft nylon double rounded bristles ( recommendated).
  • A dental floss dispensor with un waxed floss that better engage the tooth surfaces than waxed.
  • A harmless disclosing red dye agent ( chewable wafer tablets or rinse ) to contrast the plaque and tartar for effective removal.
  • Toothpaste of choice or powered baking soda which can also be used effectively.
  • A rinse agent such as water or a non-alcoholic mouthwash of choice.
  • A water pick system or a rotary toothbrush device.
  • Other dental tools such as Tongue scraper, Floss pick and Proxabrush.


Instruction Guide To Follow For Success:

  1. Chew the disclosing tablet and let it completely dissolve in the mouth. Swish it around in your mouth for 30 seconds.It will stain both the plaque tartar and the inner mouth tissue. The mouth's colored tissue in time will disappear.
  2. Immediately rinse your mouth and then examine your teeth using your facial mirror. The dental hand mirror helps to better view locations of the red-stained plaque and will require a more focused brushing and flossing.
  3. Brush your teeth surfaces the way they grow ( top teeth down and bottom teeth up) using wrist-twist rolling movements of tooth brush head bristles letting some of them slide gently . First, wet the brush bristles (Do not use toothpaste at this time) and at an angle (appx 45 degree) place head bristles pointing toward the tooth surface ( 2-3 at time) letting some of them gently slide under the edge ot the gum. Now, hold and pull tight, guiding the floss with thumbs for top teeth and index fingers for lower teeth. Caution should always be taken to have the floss under control. Try never to snap the dental floss suddenly between the teeth, because your gums tissue may be sensitive and can be injured. Use gentle sawing motions to get between the teeth area neighboring contact. After passing gently through, slide the floss just beneath edge of gum at tooth base several times along its side using a scraping motion. Repeat this scraping motion on the side between neighboring teeth, and move on to the next tooth contact and its space until all teeth surfaces are flossed. After more than a week, your gums should not bleed when plaque buildup is removed. If they bleed and continue to bleed, you should schedule a Dentist office visit for further diagnosis and treatment care.
  5. Rinse again before examining your teeth with the mirror. It should show less red-stained plaque on and between teeth.
  6. Now brush again using your toothpaste of choice or powered baking soda as done in Step 3. If much remain red stain still clings on and between teeth, you need to floss again.
  7. At this step, almost all traces of red stains at brushed areas of the gums and teeth should have been removed. if any remains, you should brush and rinse again.
  8. The cleansing of the tongue, especially its far back area is done with your toothbrush bristles or a special dental tool call a tongue scraper. It helps to remove the tongue exfoliating or its stained exfoliating tissue.

Plaque Control Action Pointers 

  • Brush after meals. When it is not possible , rinse your mouth after eating. Once a day brush and floss, preferably at night before going to bed.
  • Avoid sweet foods, especially between meals and knowing not that sugar does not have to taste sweet. Normal saliva containing bacteria can convert refined carbohydrates and foods containing it into tooth decaying acids.
  • You should replace your toothbrush at least every three months and have it properly stored with a covering. With a worn out toothbrush, you can not brush properly and it can damage your mouth with soft tissue lacerations.
