Root canal therapy may be recommended for a disease tooth pulp, an exposed and damaged pulp due to a broken or fractured crown. If a pulp is damage in anyway and left untreated, such neglect could lead to pain discomfort, infection and eventual loss of the tooth. Root canal therapy requires several appointments depending on the condition of the tooth structure, the type of root lesion involvement, surrounding adjacent tissues and the body templex medical history.
The Emergency Visit or First Appointment
The diseased pulp tissue or exposed pulp tissue is removed from the canal(s). The tooth pulp chamber and pulp canals are cleansed with files to remove necrotic debris and infectious causing bacteria. When indicated at subsequent appointments that the canal(s) are sterile or free of infectious bacteria, the canal(s) are filled and sealed with root canal material. The tooth should be protected with a full coverage permanent or temporary crown because it is now non vital and can break or fracture. Proactive dental care, healthy nutrition, along with regular dental checkups may help prevent the need for root canal therapy by early detection of a small or pit cavity.
